Not my favorite...

I have to say my days haven't been my favorite lately.  Take today for example.  No gym...always puts me in a bad mood.  At the post office I kind of snapped at Scott for not locking the doors to the car and he played the martyr and went out and locked them and then we were trying to talk about how to not lose money over shipping and our communication went out the window and we had to start over.  Mad at myself.

Then I had to cooooool off so I put my bathing suit on and laid in the hoooooot sun for an hour.  Guess that wasn't so bad.  So much for cooling off.

Then we had to work at 3pm.  My first student never shows up, my second student showed up, but not his classmate, and the one who did show up forgot his book.  So WHY DID HE EVEN COME!?  We played music games for an awkward hour because he knew I was bugged.  Poor kid.  My second class all showed up and it was game week...so another hour of music games.  Not so bad.  My third class showed up; all boys; 2 of them.  My toughest class all week.  I make one of the boys cry every week....well I don't make him cry, he just cries and he's like twelve.  I thought boys don't cry!  He cries when he loses a game.  I tried to point out that he had won two out of the three games we played, but he still cried!  My last lesson; ahhhhhh!  She didn't practice either and hasn't for the past two or three months.  She is still thinking about it.  According to her excuse.  Okay, I feel better letting off a little steam.

Our 4th was spent on the 5th.  According to one of our coworkers, Utah is the only state in the country that felt it had the right to move the 4th to the 5th (or the 3rd).  We celebrated twice.  Once on Saturday and then again yesterday, Monday.  We went to the Layton City parade which was a bust except for all the old geezers riding on the tractors.  Especially Santa Claus.  He looked like the happiest go-lucky man in the entire world.  No picture. :(  Then we walked around all the booths and found ribs and cotton candy and shave ice.  Don't worry.  We went to the gym before the parade!

Back to "not my favorite..."  I finished "Saturday" and it wasn't my favorite.  I was intrigued by the idea of the book taking place in a single day.  How could the author find enough to write about in one 24 hour period?  That kept me going.  I love the detail and intricate descriptions of Henry's relationships with each member of his family.  Especially toward his wife and children.  To be honest, the fish stew didn't sound very good at all.  Anyone agree?

In contrast, the break-in/almost murder/almost rape was something I could relate to.  Not the almost murder or rape, but the break-in/robbery.  Remember almost two years ago when I wrote about our stolen and returned bikes?  Well this memory returned when I read about Baxter breaking into Henry's home and holding his knife to Henry's wives neck.  I know the incident wasn't life threatening for us or anything close to what happened in the book.  But I feel as though I can relate to the same intense feelings the Perowne family had.

It was such a roller coaster of emotions when our bikes were stolen.  They were our only source of transportation and we relied on them heavily.  I was so completely scared when we heard the clank of the kick-stands and then my heart dropped into my stomach and I was so unbelievable angry and adrenaline kicked in.  We ran after those idiots!  Then, coming face-to-face with the men who had taken our bikes, my anger intensified so I was almost ready to rip the guys face off.  Having a face to put to the robbery was almost worse then not knowing who had done it.  I remember thinking how stupid the guy sounded with his million excuses.

After the guy left and we got our other bike back we went into our studio and I just broke down and cried.  I was scared that someone had invaded our privacy and property so easily and so randomly.  I never want to feel that vulnerable again.  Somehow that experience came to mind when I read the last few pages of "Saturday."

Anyone else relate?  Anyone else finish the book?  Again, not my favorite, but it's a start!!!

The next book up is "The Giver" by Lois Lowry.  I am already on chapter 7!!

  1. We laughed at the first part. Sorry we're insensitive jerks. Haha. But really, we just had a hard time picturing you getting mad. But it was easy picturing Scott playing the martyr.
