We woke up this morning to a woman yelling, "Get all your valuables upstairs...any computers, or clothes or anything valuable, get it upstairs!" We still can't figure out who the lady was and where she came from, but we rolled out of bed, threw on a sweater and found out that the building across from our studio was flooded about knee deep. In the pouring rain we ran over and made sure everyone was safe. Along with everyone else, we started bailing water out of people's homes. The men went to the beach to get sand bags and all we could do was keep bailing the water out. It was sick because the river flooded and brought muddy water and bugs into everybody's home.

This is the park right outside our window where all the little kiddies scream non-stop at about 3 in the afternoon. No screaming kiddies today. Our building has been very lucky so far. We are on the bottom, so we are in danger, but so far the water hasn't shown any signs of flooding our home. We don't really have anything valuable and we are leaving on Sunday for the mainland...hopefully!

This is the temple parking lot about a block from our house. This is pretty much what all of Laie looks like today.

TVA isn't the only place flooded. All of the dorms are flooded too and pretty much all of BYUH is shut down. The community is in bad shape too. Entire homes have been flooded with about knee deep water.

This is Kulanui Street looking out towards the beach from the school entrance. The security guard standing on this corner said that it was worse earlier this morning around 6am.

The large fields in front of the school turned into large lakes where people started kayaking and body boarding.

Here is Scottie on his way to take his final this morning...actually it's a re-enactment, but he really did ride his bike through knee deep water to the testing center to take his last final! Yes, the testing center is still open and I have one more final tomorrow! I hope it gets canceled...is that bad?
Love the reenactment. we're glad you guys are alright.
ReplyDeleteToo bad, we couldn't get together, but for sure when you guys return.
Wow! We've been hearing a lot about the rain, but I couldn't imagine it! Now I really can! That is so bizzare! Glad you two are safe! :D
